CHOOSING A BLOGGING PLATFORM
How did I decide on the blogging platform that was right for me? Besides doing research on the Internet, I asked: 1) City of Kelowna Communication Department; 2) the CEO of a large not for profit, and 3) my stepdaughter who has a Masters in Art and Management. The answer was the same – WordPress. It was the most suitable for my needs and computer skill sets. I looked no further.
WordPress started as a tool for blogging. It is used by authors, students, business entrepreneurs, academics, and others. WordPress is the premier content management system (CMS) available on the Internet.
WordPress is more than a blogging tool. It can be used to build your entire web presence. After using it, I began to realize how friendly, intuitive, and extensive the software is. There is a strong community of users with public support platforms, mailing lists, and websites geared to the use of WordPress. Not to forget its easy to use and free.
Getting set up and installing the software was easy and the Dashboard is well organized. Everything is clear and logical, making it easy for even a first time user like me to see where to go to manage settings and options.
WordPress.com is a “hosted solution” meaning it has no software requirement, no downloads, and no installation or server configuration. Everything is done for me to make the system work.
The limitations are that I can’t sell advertising or make money from my site unless I want to pay for it. As a student, it is an excellent starting point but I can always upgrade my blog to extend its capabilities to include installing it on a web server. For today, I just want to create a form of online diary for my PIDP program and assignments.
There are many blogging sites to choose from such as Wix, Blogger, Tumblr, Weebly, Medium, Squarespace, Joomla, Ghost, Jekyll, Drupal, Movable Type, Serendipity, Nucleus, CMS, Sitebuilder, Go Daddy, Site123, Yahoo, Bookmark, BoldGrid, and Shopify.
When WordPress is used by media organizations such as CNN, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal along with millions of personal bloggers, I feel like I’m in good company.
